The first signs of dry skin are tightness, flaky skin and visible lines. While dry skin is generally mild and undisturbing to your daily life, some cases of severe dryness can cause itchiness, peeling of the skin and even unsightly patches over the skin.
A common misconception that people have about dry skin is that it is a condition that can be reversed. Not to be confused with dehydrated skin, dry skin is a skin type. This means that if you have dry skin, you are probably born with it. Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is a temporary condition and can be easily reversed with the right products.
What causes skin dryness?
Our skin surface is naturally protected by a hydrolipidic film, composed mainly of water and sebum. This layer of film protects our skin from external stress and water loss. Some activities or certain climates can cause the hydrolipidic film to lose its efficacy, disabling the skin from retaining sufficient moisture. This, as a result, causes skin dryness.
What can be done to soothe dry skin?
To help heal dry skin and prevent further water loss, there are some lifestyle changes you may want to consider:
1. Bathe smart
Limit your bath or shower to 10 minutes to avoid drying out your skin. Use a mild, gentle cleanser and try to refrain from using bath sponges, scrubbers and washcloths. Apply moisturiser while your skin is still damp to lock in the moisture. When you are done, pat your skin dry with a soft towel.
2. Wear a lip balm when outdoors
Caring for your lips is often a neglected duty because many do not see the need to. The lips are much more susceptible to dryness because of the constant breathing, that's the reason why we have chapped lips every once in a while. Wearing lipstick or lip makeup can also cause dry lips, so pucker up with a lip balm to make your lips more kissable!
3. Hands off
You may be tempted to scratch and peel away those flaky skin, but here's a good reason why you should not. When your skin is dry, it shows that your skin's natural barrier has taken a hit. Peeling away your skin only makes it worse, instead use a soothing moisturiser that can control the itch.
