A study has shown that Hinoki can be used as a natural fly repellent which provides a 5 hours, 100% repellency against fruit fly.  Hinoki also exhibits high anti-mold and anti-bacterial properties, which makes it an ideal choice for the Japanese to use Hinoki in their furniture and building construction materials  since ancient times.
